Lunches with Dad – Ophelias

Yesterday Dad and I headed to Independence, MO for lunch.  He had a gift certificate for restaurants on the square that needed to be used and that’s what we did!  He chose to try out Ophelia’s.

Its a lovely restaurant on the Independence Square.  It’s clean and cozy and not too dark.

To start we got an appetizer of Portobello Rangoon Rolls.  These were delightful.  They had great flavor and the sauce over them was yummy too.  We are lucky we caught a picture of them before they were all devoured.

Dad chose the special, which was a Turkey sandwich of some sort that had sliced turkey, some cranberry-ish sauce and other toppings.  He chose sweet potato fries as his side.

I got the Oak Grilled Chicken Sandwich with sweet potato chips.  I’ve had better sandwiches but it was good.  The best part was the house made pickles on my sandwich.  They were perfect.

I would go again, they have lots of interesting things on the menu.  So would dad.  He did mention that it was the cleanest mens restroom that he had ever been in.

Throwback Thursday

I’m just going to leave a couple of my favorite pictures of memories past here.  The first one is me and my Great Grandma and my sister in Pennsylvania when we went to visit family years ago.  The second is my favorite cabbage patch doll, Dianna Robin, and I just “hanging around”.  When I wore my overalls, I would also put Dianna Robin in her overalls and dad would “hang” us by the straps of our overalls by the light pole out front.  Sounds weird but I remember loving it!

WIP Wednesday

This week has been a low key week for knitting.  I haven’t started any new projects since my last WIP Wednesday.  I have worked a couple rows here and there on my grandmas shawl but that’s about it.

There is a good reason I haven’t been knitting though…its my sewing machine!

A great friend found a sewing machine at a garage/estate sale last year for $5 and gave it to me.  I was super excited, but yet my machine sat in a cabinet, unused.  Last week I finally dusted that baby off, bought some necessary notions and tried this thing out!  Lo and behold, it works!  I am thrilled!  I have been working on a project in memory of my Grandfather and should have it completed next week and can reveal it then.

Job aspirations of yesteryear

Today has been a pretty low key day.  I’m glad I decided to not even try to go to the World Series parade and rally party downtown today.  By pictures and watching it on TV, it looked like complete bedlam.  There are people still trying to get out of downtown, hours later.  I do have to admit that it was fun to watch on TV and our players are all adorable.  They seem genuinely grateful and happy.

I have been working on a “secret” sewing project some today.  I can’t wait to reveal it.,I love how its turning out!

Today’s NaBloPoMo writing prompt for today intrigued me, so I thought I would share.  It is: What did you think was the coolest job in the world when you were younger? Do you still feel that way now?

So do you remember back in the day when stores used to actually put price tags on items?  They would open up a box of boxes of cereal and it was somebody’s job to use the price gun and price sticker each one of those boxes.  I was fascinated.  It looked like so much fun!  Every time I saw and employee pricing stuff I just wanted to step in and help!  Obviously I have bigger aspirations in life now which is good for me, since things don’t tend to actually get price tagged in most stores anymore.  At my job, we do have a small selection of products we sell so I occasionally get to break out the price gun and go crazy.  It’s still one of my favorite on the job tools!

Kind of a big deal

So if you’re not from New York or Kansas City or don’t follow baseball you probably don’t know this.

We are kind of a big deal around here right now.  We as in our Kansas City Royals!  We won the 2015 World Series!  We played 5 games and won it by scoring 5 runs in the 12 inning of that 5th game!

Tomorrow is the parade for the team and I’m pretty sure the whole city is basically shutting down.  Schools have cancelled, businesses are closing, its crazy.  I would like to go down, but I don’t love crazy crowds like that and think I will opt to stay out of that mess.  I found out today that I was actually at the parade in 1985, the last time we won the World Series.

WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!

WORLD SERIES CHAMPS!

Hello NaBloPoMo15!

Happy November 1st!

I’ve decided to stretch my “legs” and try this posting every day in November thing.  Life was seeming a little…dull?  I figured “Why Not?”.

I thought I would start off the month by introducing my furry kids.  We have 3 awesome dogs that im pretty sure we grow more smitten of every day.  Yes.  I know we are ate up.  I accept that fully.

Friends!

Friends!

Chuck was my first dog as an adult.  A couple months after I moved in to my house my mom and I went to the new Petsmart that just opened near us.  We were just looking around and I hadn’t really thought of actually adopting a dog but there was a group from Saline County there and there was this medium black dog in a cage.  They got him out and I sat there on the floor with him knowing that I could not put him back in the cage and walk away without him.  My mom helped me with his adoption fee and the rest is history.  Life without Chuck hasn’t been without trials.  He had separation anxiety and hates being in a kennel.  Luckily he is a well behaved dog these days outside of his kennel and doesn’t have to endure being in one.

When I adopted him I took him to work with me to be checked over and whatnot.  The shelter had pegged him as a much younger dog than he actually was so they never tested him for heartworms.  We nearly didn’t, either, but did on a whim and his test was positive!  We treated his heartworms and neutered him and he has been fine since.

Chuck is quick to bark if he thinks his honor has been insulted.  He is that grumpy old man that is always yelling at the kids to get off his lawn!  He has to eat special food to keep his gut happy.  His greatest joys in life are rawhides to chew on, soft beds to lay on and eating.  He is the first to get in your face if he thinks you have missed feeding them a meal.

Noodle came into our lives 5 years ago today as a little 12 week old baby.  We had been looking for a companion for Chuck for a month or two beforehand.  We had very specific “wants” and it took awhile to pin those down.  We ended up meeting a rescue lady in the McDonalds parking lot.  She had brought 3 litter mates out and Josh chose Noodle out of the mix.  She was so little when we got her, yet its hard for me to imagine her that small after all this time.

She is a funny creature and the ruler of our house.  If there is a scuffle, she is there READY to intervene.  She doesn’t take any sh1t off of other dogs either.  Or the cats either for that matter.  She loves to cuddle and get under the blankets and be warm.  Toys with stuffing do not stand a chance with her around as she takes great joy in digging out the stuffing and leaving it all over the living room.

NOODLE!

NOODLE!

Pickle is the youngest of the bunch, yet the biggest.  I was dabbling with fostering thru the local city shelter and Josh, Audrey and I went down to pick up a foster.  When we got there, the foster coordinator decided that the dog we were going to take was too adoptable and gave me a list of other dogs to foster.  While I was talking to her, Josh and Audrey were out in the kennels looking at dogs.  I found them and they led me to a cage with Pickle (formerly Yasmine) who was also on the list the foster coordinator gave me.  With that we took her home and started our foster relationship.  We fostered her for a couple of months and then found her a home.  As it turns out, she wasn’t a good fit for that home.  She had a short stint with BFF’s and then came back to us.  When she came back, we knew that she wasn’t going ANYwhere.  She was ours.  Her and Noodle are BFF’s and inseparable.  The only time they are separate is when they are in their kennels.

Pickles biggest fault is sometimes she loves tooooo much.  She will get really excited about seeing someone and just need to be a part of them.  She likes to put your fingers in her mouth or if you are sitting she might get up and kiss/nibble on your nose.  I think its adorable but house guests don’t always think so.  She also will tell you how it is if she isn’t getting enough attention.  The laser pointer is her favorite toy and sometimes she will just go stand and stare at the laser pointer device. Rawhides and most plush toys don’t stand a chance in her presence.

Lunches with Dad – El Patron

We are BACK!  Posting has been sporadic lately.  Things get hectic in summer in fall with Dad traveling to flying events often.  For the first time in a long time, there is nothing that should keep us from our regular Thursday lunches for awhile.

Today we were feeling like Mexican food was the order of the day.  I chose El Patron Cocina & Bar.  It’s “down on the Boulevard” with a whole host of other Mexican (and other) restaurants.

The chips and salsa were decent.  I liked the salsa quite a bit.  It was blended fine but had just enough tang and flavor that it didn’t taste like plain tomato sauce or tomato soup.  They brought a mild and hot to the table.  We both preferred the mild but would occasionally dip in the hot before the mild to mix it up.

We both ordered meals of their lunch menu.  I got a #7 (I believe) which had a beef burrito, a chicken taco (I chose the meats on both) and beans and rice.  The burrito was nice and I really enjoyed the taco.  Instead of the usual corn tortilla shell on the taco, it was a hard flour tortilla shell.  Very yummy.  The refried beans were nice and smooth and the rice was good too.

Dad ordered the 2 Flautas lunch special.  It came with 2 Flautas (duh) and rice and beans – but he decided double rice, no beans.  He had never had Flautas before and said he enjoyed them.

Best thing?  No cilantro!  I am firmly in the “hates cilantro” camp.  It tastes like soapy dirt to me!  YUCK!

We both agree that we would go back, me probably sooner than him, I would guess 🙂

WIP Wednesday

Before I get into my WIP’s today, I think I need to talk about my completed works!

First is my Hitchhiker scarf.  I know I mentioned it about a month ago but I’m still really excited about it.  I finally got around to taking some better pictures of it to show it off.  I’m still not sure on its final destination so it will sit safely stored away for now, unless I can find an outfit to wear it with.  I’m not one to wear scarves so we shall see.

Then Sunday I finished my hat that I was making from my Lion Brand Ice Cream Yarn.  I could’ve made the body a bit taller but it works out pretty well.  I have been close to finishing it all week but slowed down when I put it on DPN’s for the decreasing.  I need to learn and use the magic loop method.  DPN’s are barely ok, until you get down to those last stitches then I find them extra maddening.  I finished it at Sunday morning coffee with my BFF and she grabbed it up.  I grabbed a quick picture of me wearing it before she took it over 🙂

Also on Sunday evening I finally set down and finished my Star Stitch Scarf that I have been working on for over a year at this point.  I love the way it turned out.  That stitch looks so good with the yarn I got.  I have one in a different color that I made myself a few years ago and its still my favorite winter scarf.  I may gift it at Christmas time this year.  It will go in to “storage” until I decide on a giftee for it.

Now on to my actual WIP’s, which I believe there are only 3 of at the moment.  It’s been a long time since that has happened!

  1.  My Heartland Fiber scarf kit – my purse project since it is simple garter in the round and I can pick it up and put it down without worrying about remembering where I was at
  2. Grandmas shawl.  It’s supposed to be about 17 inches down the middle and I am just past 12 inches right now.  It’s coming right a long, but the rows are awfully long at this point!
  3. My sock knitted in the flat – no progress made on that since whenever I spoke of it last.  I’m still undecided on if I am frogging it or going to keep chugging along.

That is it!  I have the urge to start a baby blanket.  Or a blanket of some sort.  I don’t think i’ve gone this long without one cast on in awhile.  I have some yarn I overbought from the last one I need to go exchange it out for a color I will use.  I hear JoAnn’s has a new house brand of yarn that I should go check out…

Ten on Tuesday

This weeks ten things prompt is one that is fresh in my mind, since we just got back from a lovely weekend getaway.

10 Things You Take In A Travel Tote Bag

  1.  Knitting projects – yes projects.  I always have several going and pack at least 2 of them when I go anywhere.  I need variety!
  2. My Kindle.  I have several books from the library checked out on it right now.  I really need to get on those…
  3. Laptop or iPad.  Depends on where we are going and for how long, but electronics are a must.
  4. Charging cables – see said electronics in #3.
  5. Coloring books and colors of some sort.  I always like variety in choosing busy “work” items.
  6. My camera – these days its mostly neglected but you never know when you might need it, especially if you don’t pack it.
  7. Lotion – I can’t stand dry hands
  8. Toiletries – the usual stuffs
  9. A water bottle.
  10. An emergency stash of various ailment cures like ibuprofen, loperamide and nausea meds.  Always be prepared!

So what about you?  What do you always travel with?

Lunches with Dad – Cafe Al Dente and Pizza Glen

So with the hectic last month or so, we haven’t been getting to lunch much lately.  Plus, I haven’t been keeping up with blog posts either.

A couple weeks ago we did make it to a new place in town.  We went to Cafe Al Dente which is down close to the City Market.  They were super busy, but it was worth the wait.  I got a lemon chicken sandwich and pasta salad.  Dad got the special of the day, which was a chicken parmesan sandwich, and chose cottage cheese as his side.  Both sandwiches were heartily sized and so were the side dishes.

I liked them on Facebook and even got a nice message from the owner (?) thanking me for liking the page.  That was a nice touch and one I will use more with our work Facebook page, I think.

Dad and I were in Clinton visiting a few days later and took my Grandma to a family favorite, Pizza Glen, for lunch.  It has been around forever and is just good, simple food.  They have sandwiches, pizza and salads.  I can’t vouch for the sandwiches because I always get the same thing;  A salad with poppy seed dressing and a mini pizza with pepperoni, pineapple and mushrooms.  It’s cheap and the service is always prompt and friendly.  No pictures because, well, I forgot.  I was hungry!

Now I am off to find a place for this week.  Dad is heading out of town so we are going to hit up a breakfast spot this week.
