Lunches with Dad – The North End

It never fails to amaze me  that there are SO man different food options in this town.  Dad and I have tried a lot of places so far and I know we have barely scratched the surface.

Dads last pick took us to the Columbus Park area of town again, to The North End.  It is a small place with an obvious large following.  There is a bar and a few tables to sit at.  You order at the counter and then find a table and they bring your food to you.

Too be honest, I think we were both a little thrown off when we got there.  The problem, at least for us, is when you have to order at the counter off a big menu on the wall we both really feel the pressure to hurry up and just order the first thing that sounds good.  For both of us that day, it was the special, which was Beef Stroganoff.  Dad also added on an order of the Fried Meatballs on a whim.

Fried Meatball Appetizer

We had a fairly short wait for our food, and our appetizers and entrees came out at the same time.  The meat balls were big!  They had nice seasoning to them and the marinara sauce to dip them in was good.  They were nice and moist, too.

Our stroganoff was good too.  It’s different from the stroganoff I was raised on but it was a nice difference.  The portion was generous and came with a side of hot bread too.  Dad was super impressed that the meals came on actual plates, which you wouldn’t normally expect from the way the restaurant is set up.

So.  What did we think?  We both had a good meal and would go again.

Lunches with Dad – Silver Spoon Cafe and Herrdura Mexican Restaurant

This post is a two-fer.  I forgot to post about our visit to the Silver Spoon Cafe a couple of weeks ago and then this past week we went to Herrdura Mexican Restaurant.  Both of these were Dad pick weeks as it turns out.

I recently gave dad a map that I picked up at the conference I went to here in town earlier this fall.  It has all the food/drink venues in the downtown area listed on it.  It may be our new “restaurant bible”.  He used this newfound map to choose the Silver Spoon Cafe.   There are two locations downtown and we visited the one Wyandotte location.

Thursday was the day we were there and the special that day was Taco Salad/ Nachos.  I chose the taco salad and dad chose the Nachos.  Both were decent meals.  I would go back to try other things.  They have quite the menu but we were so overwhelmed, we both just went for the special.

The best part of the meal, however?  Dessert.  They have homemade cookies for sale on plates.  Dad chose a plate of iced sugar cookies.  They were fabulous.  Buttery and perfect.  YUM!

Next up is this last weeks lunch in Excelsior Springs.  We decided to make a trip up to Excelsior to get a new trailer jack and do some looking around at a couple of thrift/”junk” shops and thought we would try another Excelsior restaurant.  This one happened to be Herrdura Mexican Restaurant.

Its a nice little place with your standard Mexican fare menu.  I don’t remember what we all got (and there is a lack of photographic evidence).  The Mexican rice was very good and my meal was solid.  Dad and Audrey both agreed.  What really stood out was Dad loves Flan and he believes that they have the BEST flan he has ever tasted.

I don’t think we would drive all the way up there to eat there, but would definitely stop in if we were in the area and wanted a solid Mexican meal.

Scores?  Me: 3.5, Dad: 3.5 (He gives the flan a 5+!)

Crab Rangoon dip

This is a recipe that I got out of a cookbook years ago, but have changed it up to a version I like much better.  It can be served with a host of dip devices such as baked wonton wrappers, crackers or pita chips.  It is super easy to put together and just needs a few minutes in the microwave to cook.

Crab Rangoon Dip

Ingredients

  • 2 – 8oz boxes cream cheese, softened
  • 8 oz swiss cheese, grated
  • 3oz crab meat, chopped up
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • sweet and sour sauce (I used a 10oz jar)

img_2344

Instructions

  1. Unwrap/soften cream cheese and put in a bowl.  Add swiss cheese, crab meat and garlic and mix well.
  2. Spread mixture into a microwave safe dish, I use my Mini Baker from Pampered Chef
  3. Spread sweet and sour sauce over the top and microwave uncovered for 4-6 minutes.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

Voila!  Time to start dippin!

Lunches with Dad – Q39

This week’s choice has been on the radar for awhile now.  We noticed it on the way to another lunch spot earlier this summer and then a few days later a friend was raving about it.  Finally we made it there, and we aren’t sad about it either!

When we walked in we noticed it was already a hoppin’ place.  We always try to get to places “early” to beat the lunch rush so usually we get there around 11:15 and watch the place fill up.  This was not the case at Q39.  There were already about half of the tables filled with customers!  Our waitress immediately brought us a bottle of water for the table and 2 glasses and offered other drink choices.  She also explained the menu and some of her favorites for us first timers.  After taking our orders I pulled out my phone to check us in on Facebook, as I usually do, and check a couple of things.  Not more than 5 minutes after taking our order, the food arrived!

Dads –  Certified Black Angus Beef Brisket and Apple Cole Slaw

Both meals were DELICIOUS.  The beef was tender and not too fatty and the pulled pork was flavorful and moist.  They have 3 sauce choices: classic, zesty or chipotle-cilantro.  I am a classic kind of girl but the waitress recommended the zesty with the pulled pork and she was not mistaken!  It was the right amount of vinegary flavor to go with the pork.

Dad and I were both pleased with the entire experience.  We were in and out of there in just over 30 minutes and were glad we went early as there was a wait by the time we left, before noon even hit!

Pickle Dip!

I had some of this magic at a bachelorette party earlier this year and have been craving it ever since.  In my perusals of the internet, I found several versions of it, all slightly different.  I decided I would just take from several of them what I thought would be good and go for it.  Turns out I was right!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of sour cream
  • 2 – 8oz packages cream cheese
  • 1 – 2.5 oz pkg Sliced Dried Beef
  • 1 – 16 oz jar of dill pickles
  • 1 Tbsp pickle juice
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

IMG_2251

Instructions:

  1. soften cream cheese in a mixing bowl
  2. add sour cream
  3. dice up dried beef and pickles
  4. add spices and pickle juice
  5. mix well and let sit in refrigerator, giving it a couple hours before serving, if possible, so the flavors have a chance to meld
  6. serve with chips or crackers and ENJOY!

Lunches with Dad – Hospital Style

So lunch this week took an unexpected turn.  Technically it was my week to choose but Dad’s body had different ideas.  Thus we ended up eating at the hospital this week.

I got to peruse the cafeteria for my lunch.  I chose chicken strips, mashed potatoes with gravy and corn.  It wasn’t bad for hospital food, actually.

Dad had considerbly less choice in the matter of what he ate.  He had just gotten back up on the floor from recovery and he got a clear liquids tray.

Mmmmm…clear liquids lunch!

I don’t know that he remembers his lunch to give it a rating, but I give mine a solid 3.  However, I try to avoid eating here whenever possible…

Lunches with Dad – Ponaks

After a couple weeks off, Dad and I got back in the lunch game today.  It was my week to choose.  I was in the mood for Mexican food.  Not any Mexican food, however.  I wanted a sure thing that wasn’t covered in cilantro.  Therefore, I invoked the repeat rule this week and we went to Ponaks.

I did learn something about the salsa at Ponaks last time I went, but didn’t get to test it until this time.  If its too warm, ask for the “extra mild” salsa and then you can mix it and make something in between!  I do really enjoy their salsa, but it does tend to get a little warm sometimes.  I guess that’s what happens when you make it in batches in house, and i’m OK with that.

I got my usual, which is a “Number 1”.  It is a LOT of food and you get 2 enchiladas (ground beef, please), a tostada, a taco and beans and rice.  Dad got the lunch special which was a chicken chimichanga covered in cheese sauce with rice and beans.  We both got our fill and had some to bring home.  Mine is going to be eaten shortly for dinner, as a matter of fact. 🙂

We are both sticking with our original scores for this one.  ME: 5, DAD: 4

Lunches with Dad – The Brick

Another week, another lunch!  This week we switched it up and went Tuesday instead of Thursday since that worked better for the both of us.  This was a dad pick week and he chose a place that I have been wanting to go but he has already been, The Brick.   I first heard about the restaurant on an episode of Diners, Drive In’s and Dives and have wanted to visit ever since.

The Brick is in the Crossroads Art District and is as colorful as the neighborhood name suggests.  They have artwork from local artists on the walls which rotates every month and a stage where they frequently have live music.  Maybe i’ll hit it up sometime to listen to some live music.

We started out with some fried ravioli as an appetizer.  It was a yummy cheese filled ravioli served with a very good marinara sauce.

I got one of the dishes I saw when Guy was here, the meatloaf sandwich.  I had them leave off the chiptole ketchup and it came with a side of fries.  The meatloaf was flavorful and the bread was perfectly toasted.  It was a pretty yummy meal for me.

Dad had the fish and chips, with tater tots.  The fish was flaky and the tater tots were perfectly cooked, according to dad.

Over all it was a good meal, we both would go back.

Lunches with Dad – Ming Dragon

This week it was my turn to choose the restaurant.  I had a place chosen, but it wasn’t exciting me this morning.  So, I let Audrey have some say.  She was in the mood for Chinese food.  Not just any Chinese food, but a buffet.  We have an old favorite close to home but decided not to invoke the repeat exception and take a chance.

This led us to Ming Dragon, in Liberty.  I’m not going to lie.  Its unimpressive to look at, both outside and in.  We were greeted right off by a very nice server and seated.  Our drink orders were taken and we were invited to help ourselves to the buffet.  The buffet had the standard choices of most Chinese buffets.  The egg drop soup and crab rangoon were both good.  This buffet also had delicious chicken dumplings/potstickers which I hadn’t seen before (on a buffet).  The dessert buffet was pudding and jello and an assortment of cookies.  I was very amused with the fig newtons and generic cream sandwich cookies that were featured on the bar.  We all got our fill.  I will go back as it seems to have good bang for the buck.

Scores?

Dad: 3

Me: 3.5

Audrey 3.5

I think we would all agree that even though overall scores make it look like we didn’t enjoy it, if we compared it just to other Chinese buffets, it would score higher.

Ten on Tuesday – Favorite Ice Cream Flavors Edition

So this is a tough one for me.  Not because I don’t like ice cream.  Trust me.  I do.  A LOT.  But…10 of my favorite flavors?  I don’t know that there is that many.  Here it goes anyway.  Starting with my MOST favorite.

  1. Peanut Butter Ice Cream with Peanut Butter topping.  There is only one place in the world to get this and that is in a little town called Brookville, Pennsylvania at a place called Buffs.  My dad has been going there since he was a kid and we tend to go everyday if we are in town.  Seriously.  They have lots of flavors but that is the only one i’ve tried in a LONG time (since I was a kid long time).
  2. Talenti Gelato in Belgian Milk Chocolate.  Best ice cream in the store.  Expensive but smooth and delicious.  I haven’t been able to find my Milk Chocolate in awhile and it makes me sad.
  3. Vanilla frozen custard from Sheridans.  The chocolate is too rich IMO.  I get stuff mixed in but the vanilla custard is my favorite.
  4. Cookies and Cream.  But not always.
  5. Mint and Oreo.  But not always.

I think that’s the end.  I couldn’t get to 10.  I could list a bunch of flavors, but I like it pretty simple.
